Вот пишет Альфред, лорд Теннисон:

The path by which we twain did go,
Which led by tracts that pleased us well,
Thro' four sweet years arose and fell,
From flower to flower, from snow to snow… И т. п.

Меня интересует слово thro’. Это, понятное дело, through. Но что означает апостроф? В следующей строфе говорится:

And we with singing cheer’d the way - вместо cheered, потому что в поэзии допустимо произнести cheered так, чтобы -ed составляло отдельный слог, и апостроф говорит нам этого не делать. Но в слове through и так всего один слог, никакой безумный шекспирианец не произносит его, кажется, thro-oo - чего же там сокращать?

Чего именно я не понимаю?

Меня еще такъ же смущало 'Tis. Непонятно, почему сокрашать такъ, а не конвенцiонально.

Это, вероятно, рудиментарная орфография, восходящая к среднеанглийскому. В Чосере, Гауэре и пр. "-gh" ещё произносилось, а когда перестало, то в поэтических текстах, я предполагаю, появился альтернативный спеллинг, подчёркивающий этот факт. Ко времени Свифта, однако, он потерял всякий смысл, как Вы указали, но англ. сравнительно консервативен в орфографии, особенно в поэзии, и особенно для Теннисона, постоянно ссылавшегося на поэзию былых времён.
