seminaristMany of Swift's utopian notions are obtained from Plato's Republic, and much of the Republic is modeled on the Spartan way of life (or, at least, on the Spartan way of life as it was ideally supposed to be). The Spartan way of life, and particularly of bringing up children, was incredibly austere, and is often praised by those who have never been subjected to it.
