Dear Mr. Punch,
I am in a fix. I need you to help me. Never in all my life have I seen anything like this. See here. I’ve been at school for five days. First I went to a wretched private school, where the Eton Grammar was beaten into my head every day. Then I went to public school, where that grammar wasn’t used: and so the first thing that I had to do was to unlearn everything that I knew, and learn no end of new rules. Now, believe me if you can, nine men, in their own opinion tremendous swells, wrote a new Grammar: and just today my schoolmaster came to the class and said: “Boys, all of you study this book.” Well: I opened the book; and never before have I seen such farrago. What do you think of this? Genetive case comes after accusative. What baby doesn’t know well that by the nature of things genetive follows nominative? I solemnly declare that all this precious book is full of errors. Your time is too precious to listen to one half of those; but take my word. What I say is true; and what I wish is this: I wish that I had here those nine learned, as they think, men. I wish I had to teach them this book. I wish that all their heads were one head; oh my eyes, how I would break that one head!

P.S. Maybe some will think that I can’t write very good Latin and that therefore it won’t do me any harm to learn this new Grammar. Fools!

Date: 2024-12-09 12:29 pm (UTC)* В Австралии решили ввести некую новую (подброшенную из Метрополии) систему обучения чтению, согласно которой дети должны сначала научиться читать всякую абракадабру, чтоб овладеть "чистым" навыком ассоциации букв со звуками. И только после можно детям давать настоящий текст.
